Your child's first jiu-jitsu class: what to expect.

Signing your kid up for a trial class? Here's what actually happens in the first 60 minutes, what we really teach them, and the right questions to ask on the drive home.

Before you get to the gym.

Gear: rashguard and shorts. 450 is a NOGI academy, including for kids — no kimono. Nails trimmed, hands and feet. A water bottle. Long hair tied back.

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. It gives your kid time to see the mats, meet a coach, and settle in before class starts.

The first 10 minutes.

Playful warm-up: running, rolls, movement games. The goal isn't performance — it's warming up the body and building a group energy. Several coaches circulate, learn names, correct postures.

What we actually teach.

Technique, yes — one or two positions per class, explained simply, drilled until it sticks. But mostly: how to fall without getting hurt, how to say "stop" when something hurts (tap), how to respect a partner, and how to come back after losing. These are the skills that stick, well beyond the class itself.

Kids sparring is closely supervised, with strict rules. Several coaches on the mats at all times. No child is left alone to roll.

Discipline, respect, and why it matters.

Kids jiu-jitsu teaches one simple thing: effort leads to progress, and progress takes time. Your child will lose. They'll try again. They'll eventually land a move they were missing last week. That loop — failure, patience, success — is probably the most valuable lesson the sport can offer.

After class: the right questions.

Ask what they learned — not whether it was "fun". Ask them the name of a partner. Ask if they want to come back. If they say yes, bring them back. If they hesitate, bring them back anyway — two or three classes minimum. One class rarely gives a real read; three almost always does.
